Editing Focus

My expertise covers a wide variety of topics—from fiction to science. Beyond my generalist background, my specialty is working closely with authors to develop and perfect their projects, and tackling big projects that require restructuring or major rewriting.

My objective is to enhance the writing by removing or clarifying what is confusing or unfocused. My many years in journalism created the ability to search for the nugget in a story. This skill has translated to finding the essence in any project, whether it’s an online essay or traditional book.

As a copy editor, besides reviewing the spelling and grammar, I check for consistency and whether the writing conveys the author’s intended purpose. I have a reputation for a light touch that fixes a problem so subtly that the change blends in seamlessly with the author’s writing. Because I believe that every word matters, I make sure that the word conveys what the author intended. I also look for repetition, which can impede the flow of the writing.

As a substantive editor, I look at the bigger picture, determine what’s missing, and whether the book works as a whole Pagesas well as on a smaller level. Where the writing is confusing or could be enlarged, I offer suggestions where appropriate.

As a writer myself, I’m sensitive to an author’s voice, and, as an editor, I strive to maintain that integrity in the editing process. My editing style is nurturing while being conscientious and honest.  I am supportive of the author but not afraid to be truthful when necessary.
